What happens during a dental check-up?

A check-up is a preventive measure comprising a comprehensive examination of your mouth and teeth including:

• The tongue, cheeks and other soft tissues in the mouth. In particular, we always take care to check for any early signs of oral cancer.
• The alignment of the jaw and your “bite” (occlusion), or how your upper and lower teeth fit together.
• Damage or issues arising from poor occlusion including broken or worn teeth, or headaches.
• Signs that you may be clenching or grinding your teeth (known as bruxing).
• An examination of your gums and signs of gum (periodontal) disease.
• The condition of existing dental restorations such as fillings crowns, bridges or veneers.
• Dental decay and signs of damage from soft drinks or excessive tooth brushing.

An dental check-up may also include taking digital X-rays or scans to examine the areas between, inside and under your teeth including the gum and jawbone.

Digital imagery is often essential for diagnosing the causes of pain or discomfort and to help with planning treatment.
