When a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be saved, particularly if it is cracked down to the root or broken at the gum line, it may need to be taken out.
A wisdom tooth that is causing pain, swelling or bleeding may also be extracted to ease comfort.
A tooth extraction is a relatively routine dental procedure, performed under local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth.
For complex or multiple extractions, sedation may also be used to make the procedure more comfortable.
When the tooth is visible above the gum line, your dentist will use special instruments to loosen and then extract the tooth.
For wisdom teeth or teeth broken below the gum line, your dentist may need to make a small incision into your gum and then surgically remove the tooth.
After an extraction, the gum may be sutured to aid the natural healing process.
Light pressure is applied to the tooth socket to limit any bleeding and a blood clot should soon form in the gums at the extraction point. It is important not to dislodge the blood clot which could dry out the tooth socket.
Once the anaesthetic wears off, it may feel a little sore for a day or two. Warm salt water mouth rinses can provide relief and promote healing, starting the day after the extraction.
It is advisable to not rinse your mouth, avoid hot drinks, smoking, using mouthwash or brushing the extraction site for the first day or 24 hours following the extraction.
